Africa has the highest youth population in the world with the highest unemployment and crime rate. The poverty rate in Kenya has resulted in many talented artists settling for casual labor and illegal activities to provide for their families. Kenya has alot of musical and creative talent; however, the main challenge is a lack of resources to nurture and recognize these abilities.
Due to a lack of empowerment programs children and youth drop out of school due to lack of school fees or bad company, they end up being exploited into child labor, some get lost in drugs which results in crime to support their addiction leading to social injustice i.e mob justice this is so sad since it increases the rate of death among the youth. Young girls are unempowered, desperate and idle this leads to higher levels of teenage pregnancies and single mothers. Politicians in Africa are well known for their irresponsible incitment and using the youth for inhumane agendas just for hand outs, leading to division in the country, hate and death ;For example youths were used during one of the darkest periods of Kenyan history to kill and harm others THE 2007 POST ELECTIONS VIOLENCE. The darkness that feeds off these young talents is finishing them up fast and we need to fight against it.
Our founder, Laban, is a success story and testimony of grass to grace and is deeply committed to transforming the lives of underprivileged children and youth. Growing up in slums, he overcame adversity to build a better future for himself and his family. Drawing from his own experiences, Laban is determined to empower young people facing similar challenges.
Eljohns Music Empowerment Village aims to provide a nurturing environment for disadvantaged but talented youth. The program not only helps them discover their potential but also keeps them engaged, recognizing that idle hands invite trouble. Leveraging international networks and resources, we envision making a significant impact on the lives of these young individuals.
We are grateful for having partnered with Swiss Gospel Singers from Switzerland in holding the Charity Concerts in Basel and Zurich to be able to fundraise for this noble project. Having visited Kenya, they actually have first hand experience on how things are on the ground. Music production and songwriting are the heart of every viral and good music and behind the beats and lyrics is a person some of the young people in Kenya are good writers and aspire to be great producers but don’t have the right knowledge and guidance. We are here to provide a network of professionals to train these young people.
ElJohns Music Empowerment Village will house a cutting-edge music school, where aspiring musicians refine their craft and develop a solid foundation in musical literacy. Whether a singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, or music producer, our curriculum will be tailored to meet the unique needs of each artist. Experienced instructors, who are industry professionals, guide students through a comprehensive program that covers theory, technique, composition, and production.
Through our Exchange Programs Hub, local artists will travel to Europe and the USA to learn from international counterparts, access scholarships, and network with students while having international students, teachers and volunteers come to Kenya to learn, teach and mentor. Special programs during events like the Mziki Gospel Festival will allow international students to mentor local talent.
ElJohns aims to preserve history by keeping the African music heritage alive through a museum. This museum will showcase the art, culture and evolution of African music from East, South, North, and West Africa to its current form, celebrated and recognized on international stages. Africa takes pride in its rich culture and diverse music genres such as Urbantone, Bongo, Afrobeats, Amapiano, and Lingala, among others.
Recognizing the importance of practice and refinement, ElJohns Music Empowerment Village wants to provide state-of-the-art rehearsal spaces where artists can access musical equipment and dedicated areas to perfect their acts. These spaces are offered to artists for free, removing financial barriers and ensuring that every artist have the opportunity to fine-tune their performances and compositions.
The Concert Hall at ElJohns Music Empowerment Village will serve as a vibrant space where creativity converges. It will provide a venue for our students and other artists showcase their talents through musical events, concerts, and festivals. .
In many slums like Gioto, Bondeni, Kivumbini, Kaptembwa, and others, children and youth face numerous challenges, including dropping out of school due to lack of fees, exploitation in casual labor and at dump sites, and involvement in drugs and crime. This cycle of social injustice often leads to tragic outcomes, including increased youth mortality rates and teenage pregnancies. Mziki Tours' outreach program aims to address these issues by mentoring and empowering slum youth through music. Through activities like concerts, games, feeding programs, and storytelling sessions, the organization has observed significant positive changes in behavior, including reduced drug abuse, crime, teenage pregnancies, school dropouts, and child labor. Inspired by his own journey from poverty to success, the founder of Mziki Tours is passionate about transforming these vulnerable youth into influential members of society. Drawing on personal experience and international networks, he is committed to providing the support and opportunities these young people need to thrive and break the cycle of poverty and injustice.
Our founder supports several youths financially through secondary school, during his visits he holds empowerment sessions with the students where he trains and mentors them on Music he has also donated a couple of musical instruments to passionate students and music departments. Through this, the young people can understand music as a career and can count on him when they are done with secondary education. This Village will act as a haven for these students who want to pursue music after high school since they can get top-notch professional guidance at a very affordable rate. Also plays a huge role in modelling the morals of the society where we have young people engaged to avoid idleness which leads to crime, depression, teenage pregnancies, and more.
